2024 Rising Star Award
A prestigious leadership honor presented by the State Council, celebrating an exceptional young leader under 25 who demonstrates remarkable contributions and impact.
At just 16 years old, Emma Yu’s recognition as the youngest honoree at the Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans Leadership Award Banquet was both profound and humbling. Standing before an audience of 700, including legislators, community leaders, and distinguished guests, she had the incredible honor of delivering a speech celebrating the contributions and growing influence of over 370,000 Asian Pacific Islanders who call Minnesota home. The evening served as a powerful testament to the vibrancy and strength of Minnesota’s diverse communities.
The event also marked two significant milestones: the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the Fall of Saigon and the 40th Anniversary of the Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans. As one of five awardees, Emma was honored to be recognized as the Council’s youngest honoree in history for her contributions to the AAPI community and the state. The stories shared by her fellow awardees were deeply inspiring, highlighting the resilience, contributions, and impact of the AAPI community across generations.
In addition to receiving the award, Emma took the opportunity to share her two books, AAPI Legends A-Z and The Untold Stories of AAPI, with legislators. She also discussed Bill 5037, which aims to promote the teaching of AAPI history and cultures in Minnesota schools. She hopes that this legislation will pave the way for future generations to understand and appreciate the richness of the AAPI community’s heritage and influence within the state.
Reflecting on the support that brought her to this point, Emma shared, “I could not have reached this point without the support of many. First and foremost, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my family, who have always encouraged me to pursue my dreams. I am also deeply thankful to the AAPI Youth Voices team, our advisors, and my teachers for their invaluable guidance. Lastly, I want to extend a special thanks to my friend, Brian Lin, whose inspiration has been instrumental in my journey. I can confidently say that without him, AAPI Youth Voices would not exist. It is a gift that I am honored to share with the world, made possible by his steadfast motivation.”
Tonight, the state of Minnesota recognized the efforts of a young advocate committed to uplifting youth voices and fostering greater understanding and unity. Looking ahead, Emma is more determined than ever to continue advocating for diversity, inclusion, and empowerment within the community. This honor marks only the beginning of a journey dedicated to making a meaningful difference for the AAPI community and beyond.
