ChAPTER LEADERS

David Close

Alexandria, MN, Class of 2027

I want to join AAPI Youth Voices because I strongly believe in the overarching goal of spreading culture and diversity around the nation, I think with enough help from communities across the world we can make it a better place.

I am in 9th grade and have lived in Alexandria my whole life. I have two black cats named Bates and Blair. My favorite subject is Science, specifically Chemistry, and I love exploring theoretical possibilities involving the subject. I enjoy hiking through forests and making my trail on the way, and love taking pictures.

Callen Chittenden

UW Madison, WI, Class of 2029

“Being Asian, I do find it a little disproportionate to hear a lot about African American and white history in our curriculums, but not really much about Asians. It all just kinda gets somewhat glossed over and it makes me a little sad. I want to be a part of changing that if possible. I also just want to branch out this year, try new things, join new clubs, and I feel like this is something new and aligns well with my interests.

I enjoy rock climbing, being outside, and learning new things. My favorite place to be is up high. My favorite food is warm Pho on a cold day.

Dillon Smith

Corvallis, Oregon, Class of 2028

Emma Taggart

” My brother currently serves as Board Member for AAPI. I have definitely noticed the disparity of education regarding Asian Americans in the school curriculum. I hope to help AAPI pass the bill which will begin to end this discrimination.

Ever since the age of 4, I have been trained as a classical pianist. I enjoy performing in concerts and competition, and using music as a channel of communication to connect with different people. In joining AAPI, I will use my musical background to continue to connect with people of different age, gender, race, and background. “

Anna Nguyen

Blaine, MN, Class of 2026

“Hello, I’m Anna, a sophomore at Andover High School. I’m part of the AAPI community and am all about advocating for people like me. I hope to make some huge strides by joining AYV, make new friends, and get to know others better. I also want to surround myself with people like me.

I like being involved in after school activities, like marching band, knowledge bowl, taekwondo, Leo club. I love Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine and like baking as well. I think it’s important for youth to speak up so that the general public understands us better.”

Kennedy Payton

Louisville, Kentucky, Class of 2025

“I would like to join AAPI Youth Voices because minority groups in the united states are constantly underrepresented and overlooked. I would love to help speak out about the changes that are necessary for growth in regards to equality and justice for all races. The school district curriculum lacks content about AAPI history and lacks examples of AAPI role models so that future generations know that they can make a difference as well.

I believe that it is extremely important for youth to speak up and provide diverse outlooks on topics impacting our world today because our experiences and culture along with the words we share are vital to promoting change. In doing so we will be able to work towards fixing social inequality and creating a more equitable future. I am on my schools varsity tennis team and enjoy, writing, creating and listening to music.”

Kylie Xiong

Andover, MN, Class of 2027

” I was interested to join AAPI Youth Voices because I wanted to make friends with more minority! I want to be able to encourage other students that they can be comfortable here at Andover High School and know that there are people just like them here!

I am a freshman at Andover High School. I’m super into makeup, fashion, and music!! What’s important to me is having people speak up about their problems instead of dealing with it by themselves. I want to encourage those who feel silent and assure that they are not alone and they do have a voice. It’s important to know that everyone has a voice and should use it to help encourage others to speak up on what they’re going through and how they feel!”

Savannah Anderson

Ham Lake, MN, Class of 2027

“I’ve been actively engaged with student voices since sixth grade, thanks to the inspiration I found in a fellow student at my school, Emma Yu. My passion for involvement extends to music, as I was a part of three orchestras last year, and this year, I’m committed to participating in at least two. I also thrive on getting involved in my school, particularly when it comes to advocating for my peers when they face injustices.”

Kimberly Yang

Anoka, MN, Class of 2027

“The reason why I join AAPI Youth Voices is because I’m extremely interested in different Asian cultures and their history! As I am a Hmong American who has little knowledge in my culture, especially my language. Our history is known by not so many people on Earth, which is why I want to share and learn more about my and other’s ethnic history! So others around can learn  about our stories!

I’m currently a Hmong dancer, which is my first year in a dance studio called IADT! “

Alex Vang

Andover, MN, Class of 2026

“I want to see and be apart of this change, step by step, we all can work together and accomplish this goal of having culture get more of an impact to the united states.

Allowing the youth to speak up is a part of spreading word and allowing other people and supporters to join while also allowing chances of success rise. The only thing that is important to me is that everyone is alright, kind and safe.”

Ellen Liang

Sydney, Australia, Class of 2025

“As a South Asian woman who has experienced first hand adversity towards my family along with individuals who share my same nationality, I understand the importance of advocacy for topics that surround the ideas of representation, international affairs and discrimination as a whole. AAPI Youth Voices gives an outlet to bring attention to these significant issues in an ever growing world.

I am a junior in high school from Southern Pakistan, but currently live in Louisville, Kentucky. I personally believe that it is important for youth to speak up so that we can make an impact for future generations.  I am trained in classical South Asian dance styles and participate in the South Asian Student Association.”

Each time someone comments on my skin color, my hair, the food I eat- I realize what I work towards- a world where my kids, and my friend’s kids, don’t have to hide their favorite parts of their culture to be accepted by the majority. The way society shapes itself in the future is dependent on youth, so we must learn our responsibilities and advocate to make a world in which we can express our authentic selves.”
