A Cross-Continental Odyssey
AAPI Youth Voices embarked on the journey of interviewing AAPI individuals with remarkable life stories and significant contributions to our society. The younger generations, born in the U.S., yearned to hear narratives that had remained untold, stories that transcended national borders. It is through this mutual understanding that we come together as one unified community.

A Cross-Continental Odyssey
Dr. Marion Raflores' Remarkable Journey from the Philippines to the United States and Her Impact as the Sole Cancer & Blood Specialist in Alexandria, Minnesota
Marion B. Raflores, born in 1973 in Pasay City, Metro Manila, completed her education journey by graduating from Saint Scholastica High School in 1990. She pursued a bachelor’s degree in Biology at the University of the Philippines, completing it in 1994, and later obtained her medical degree from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in 1999.
In the Philippines, it is common for three generations to live together as one big family, reflecting the strong emphasis on close-knit familial bonds and the value placed on family relationships. This cultural practice is deeply rooted in the Filipino tradition of close family ties, where elders are highly respected and play a significant role in shaping the values and traditions passed down to younger generations.
In the Philippines, if one cannot afford higher education, attending college becomes a challenge as there is no provision for student loans. It often relies on personal or family financial resources. Marion was fortunate to receive support from her family, enabling her to pursue and continue her education.
In 2000, Marion relocated to the United States for advanced internal medicine training. She commenced her residency at Western Pennsylvania Hospital/ Temple University in Pittsburgh, successfully completing it in June 2003. Subsequently, she got married and took the role of chief resident in internal medicine for a year. Marion then pursued a fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at Western Pennsylvania Hospital/Allegheny General Hospital, concluding her studies in 2007. She is duly board-certified in Medical Oncology and Hematology.
Following her fellowship, Marion made Alexandria, Minnesota her new home, where she embarked on her career as a dedicated cancer/blood doctor. Specializing in treating adults with cancer, clotting disorders, and other hematological problems, Marion brings her expertise to the community. In her professional capacity as a cancer specialist, Marion dedicates four days a week to her work. Her job is well appreciated in her community, as she is the sole cancer specialist. Her journey to obtain U.S. citizenship spanned fourteen years, and now, she makes it a point to visit her family in the Philippines, especially during the Paskuhan sa Maynila Festival (A month-long Christmas celebration in Manila featuring festive lights, decorations, and various events, celebrating the Filipino Christmas spirit.)
Given the profound significance of family gatherings and celebrations in Filipino culture, these occasions serve as vital opportunities for family members to unite, strengthen their bonds, and share in the joys of life. These gatherings often involve festive meals, music, and various cultural traditions that highlight the importance of family in Filipino society.
Beyond her professional life, Marion is joyfully married with two children and takes delight in exploring the world through travel, snorkeling, and swimming. She takes immense pride in her two children, Isabella Rodriguez and Alex Rodriguez, both born in the U.S. and raised in a predominantly white community, yet they have managed to uphold and cherish their Filipino traditions and culture.
Isabella Rodriguez, Marion’s daughter, is currently a senior at Alexandria Area High School. Formerly a lifeguard, she is now a certified CNA at Nelson Gables. Isabella enjoys baking and spending quality time with friends. Additionally, she participated in swimming as a varsity team member, specializing in breaststroke and the 500. Looking ahead, Isabella aspires to pursue a degree in biology at the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities, with plans to commence her studies in 2024.
Alex Rodriguez, Marion’s son, is embarking on his freshman year at Alexandria Area High School. His passion for music is evident as he currently receives lessons at the Wirth Center for the Performing Arts under the guidance of Dr. Paul Wirth. Alex has actively participated in various piano competitions across Minnesota, securing victories and commendable placements. In addition to his piano skills, he is proficient in playing the violin and viola.
Dedicated to his musical pursuits, Alex is a valued member of the Central Minnesota Youth Orchestra, the Central Lakes Symphony Orchestra, and his high school’s Rainbow Strings Orchestra. Beyond his musical endeavors, Alex serves as a board member for AAPI Youth Voices, demonstrating a commitment to fostering cultural awareness and making a positive impact on society.
Outside of academics and music, Alex finds joy in activities such as biking and skiing. Moreover, he contributes to his community by volunteering at his church’s music ministry and participating in fundraising concerts.
Dr. Marion Raflores’s cross-continental and remarkable journey has led her to realize and achieve her American dream. Now, she sees it as the responsibility of the next generation to embark on their own path, pursue higher education, and strive towards fulfilling their unique American dreams.
