From Earthquake Disaster to the Journey of English Learning

Sunny, a student at Chongqing Gaoyang Public School, faced significant challenges after her family relocated there following the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. Adjusting to life in Chongqing after their displacement wasn’t easy for Sunny, who found herself grappling with the trauma of her past and struggling academically in her new urban environment. Unfamiliar with English, her attempts at the language were met with ridicule from classmates, labeling her as a “country bumpkin,” causing her to withdraw into silence and insecurity.

Fortunately, with the encouragement of caring teachers and locals, Sunny began to regain her confidence. A turning point came when she reached out to AAPI Youth Voices for assistance. AAPI Youth Voices provided her with invaluable one-on-one online tutoring sessions, completely free of charge, connecting her with skilled instructors who nurtured her English skills.

Today, Sunny exudes confidence in her English learning journey, fearlessly engaging in class discussions. Through resilience and the unwavering support of her community and organizations like AAPI Youth Voices, she has triumphed over her past obstacles and is poised for success in her educational pursuits.
